A brand's best-selling product can lose its Buy Box without warning. One hour it has the Add to Cart button, the next it shows only a See All Buying Options link, and the orders stop. There is no email, no alert, and no obvious reason on the page.

Understanding why Amazon does this is the first step to responding to it. New research that tracked thousands of products hour by hour has made the triggers much clearer than seller forums ever could, and the real causes are not always the ones brands assume.

What is Buy Box suppression?

Buy Box suppression is when Amazon decides not to feature any offer for a product, removing the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons and sending shoppers to a See All Buying Options page instead. Around 98% of Amazon sales flow through the Buy Box, so a suppressed product is effectively pulled out of the normal path to purchase even though it is still listed and can be in stock.

Why does Amazon suppress the Buy Box?

Amazon suppresses the Buy Box when no available offer meets its standards for price, delivery and seller quality. In practice that usually happens for one of two reasons: the offer that was being featured leaves the market, or a seller raises its price sharply and nothing else on the listing is good enough to take its place.

A 2026 study from researchers at Northeastern University tracked 17,754 products at hourly intervals for eight weeks and found that the strongest triggers sit on the Amazon listing itself, not on rival websites. When the featured offer exits the market with no comparable replacement, suppression becomes far more likely. A price increase of 10% or more from the featured seller has a similar effect.

Researchers at Northeastern University who tracked 17,754 Amazon products at hourly intervals found that when the featured offer leaves the market with no good replacement, the probability of Buy Box suppression rises roughly 60-fold. Read the study.

Does lower pricing on other retailers cause suppression?

Lower prices on other retailers can raise the chance of suppression, but research suggests they matter less than changes on the Amazon listing itself. Amazon monitors pricing across Amazon and external retailers, and external prices can influence Buy Box eligibility and pricing decisions, yet the same study found competitor prices only modestly increased the likelihood of suppression.

This matters because a brand that focuses only on what is happening on Walmart or eBay can miss the more common cause. If an authorised seller sells out, or an unauthorised one spikes the price, the Buy Box can vanish with nothing changing off Amazon at all.

How long does Buy Box suppression last, and what does it cost?

In the study, the median suppression lasted about six hours, though the average was closer to 48 hours because some episodes persist much longer. The cost is not limited to the hours the product is unbuyable.

The same research measured what happens to a suppressed product over the following days. Its position in search results drops sharply, its sponsored ad placements disappear within about twelve hours, and its sales rank worsens within two days. A short suppression during a launch or a peak sales period can do damage that outlasts the suppression itself.

What can brands do about Buy Box suppression?

The first step is visibility: knowing the moment the Buy Box is suppressed and what changed on the listing when it happened. Suppression is fast and often short, so a check once a day will miss most of it.

From there the response is practical. Keep authorised sellers in stock and priced within policy so the featured offer does not drop out or spike. Watch who currently holds the featured offer and at what price. And treat a suppression event as a signal to investigate, not a glitch to wait out. Lupa monitors Buy Box status, the featured seller and pricing across Amazon and external retailers, so a brand sees the change as it happens rather than finding it in a sales report weeks later.
